COMMERCIAL SPACE - THE LAST MILE

Crafting a Modern Showroom in Lisbon's Core

This project involved the complete interior design for The Last Mile, a new commercial venture that secured a centrally located yet uninspiring former office space in Lisbon. Characterized by generic drywall partitions and sterile fluorescent lighting, the existing interior required a radical transformation to align with the client's vision: a stylish and functional showroom that effectively showcased their innovative products while respecting budgetary constraints.

The Challenge: From Sterile Office to Engaging Showroom

The primary challenge was to convert a bland and outdated office environment into a dynamic and inviting retail space. The existing interior offered little in terms of character or visual appeal, presenting a blank canvas that needed to be imbued with a distinct identity. The client required a design that not only effectively displayed their range of personal electric scooters – a relatively new concept in the local market – but also created a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged customer engagement and exploration. Balancing the need for a striking showroom aesthetic with the practical considerations of durability, functionality, and a limited budget was also a key consideration.

The Design Approach: Embracing Rawness, Enhancing Product

Our design approach embraced the inherent raw and industrial potential of the stripped-down space. Rather than concealing the existing unfinished walls, we chose to expose and celebrate their texture and authenticity, creating a unique and characterful backdrop for the showroom. This raw aesthetic was further enhanced by the introduction of durable and practical concrete flooring. To define distinct zones within the open-plan space without compromising the overall sense of flow, we strategically installed black metal grids, offering both visual separation and a contemporary industrial edge. The products themselves took centre stage, showcased on minimalist yet impactful plywood displays designed to blend functionality with a clean aesthetic.

To counterbalance the industrial elements and create a more inviting atmosphere for customers, we incorporated subtle yet sophisticated touches. Thoughtful lighting solutions replaced the harsh fluorescent fixtures, combining warm ambient illumination with focused spotlights to effectively highlight the displayed scooters and draw attention to their features. The layout was carefully considered to encourage customer exploration and interaction with the products, culminating in the creation of a welcoming seating area. This dedicated space invites visitors to spend time learning about the innovative personal electric scooters in a comfortable and engaging environment, fostering familiarity with this emerging mode of transport.

The Result: A Unique Showroom Reflecting Innovation

The result is a distinctive and modern showroom that seamlessly merges raw industrial elements with an approachable sophistication. The exposed walls and concrete flooring provide a robust and authentic foundation, while the black metal grids and plywood displays offer a functional yet visually striking framework for showcasing the products. The carefully considered lighting and inviting seating area create a welcoming environment that encourages customer engagement. This design effectively reflects the innovative ethos of The Last Mile's products, providing a unique and memorable retail experience that respects the client's budget while establishing a strong and contemporary brand presence in the Lisbon market.
